Measurement of Accidents

Most statistical analyses of accidents are based on either frequency or severity or both. The standard frequency rate represents the number of disabling injuries for given man hours of exposure. The standard severity rate is the total time charged as a result of lost time injury for a given number of man hours of exposure. Thus the frequency rate indicates how many injuries are occurring in relation to number of man hours worked and the severity rate indicates how severe those injuries are in terms of wage lost in relation to hours of exposure. The safety engineer is concerned with reducing both frequency with which accident occurs and the frequency with which they threaten. He wants to know why a man fell off a ladder even if no injurious injuries resulted. The severity rate, which takes into account the extent and severness of the injuries, is also closely associated with the efficiency of the safety programme. If an employee receives laceration and abrasion in falling from ladder, ...

Safety profession is a dignified Job

Why safety officers are over loaded in India and why 90% of those candidates goes jobless or work for poor salaries? The first answer is the lack of quality. We want quality not quantity. I will explain the main reason behind this. 90% safety students in India are not properly educated. Many don’t have any graduation and some of them are not even passed 12th grade. Then they straight come into do a 1 year safety diploma. Safety institutions are giving this diploma with a 15 or 30 day class. So basically it’s just a 1 month course and the certificate come with 1 year. You dont need any skill to pass this exam. Even if you write pure wrong answers they still give you pass mark because these are evaluating by the institutions itself. The institutions want business so they give pass mark to all students. Even if you don’t write the exam they may still give the diploma certificate. That’s what i said the quality is pathetic. Who is the main culprit behind this? Safety institutions ar...
